Jones Beach doesn't announce itself with signage or fanfare. You park on Boorook Street, slip through the dune access, and suddenly you're standing on a kilometer-long stretch of sand that feels like the coast's best-kept open secret—except every Kiama local already knows it. The beach curves gently north, hemmed by grassy headlands that glow emerald after rain. Norfolk pines throw afternoon shade across the southern end, where families spread picnic blankets and toddlers dig moats in damp sand.

The surf here is honest and forgiving. Waves peel left and right over sandy bottom, building shape on east swells and offering enough push for longboarders without the brutality of nearby Bombo's reefs. You'll see grommets learning to duck-dive in the white wash, their bright rashguards bobbing between sets. On weekday mornings, the line-up thins to a handful of regulars who nod but don't crowd.
What sets Jones apart is its lack of pretense. There's no surf club fortress, no metered parking, no boardwalk vendors. Just a gravel lot, a simple shower, and sand that stretches far enough that your dog can gallop full-tilt without bothering anyone. Between May and November, humpback whales breach within binocular range, their tails slapping the Pacific as you towel off saltwater and wonder why you'd ever surf anywhere else.
